Meet Dr. Paul Birch:
I believe marital happiness is experienced within small moments — each glimmer of intimacy, affection, commitment, friendship, or service is a vital building block in a happy marriage. Yet life and routine and stress seem to interrupt those moments, leaving us feeling alone or pitted against each other.  The happiest marriages are those who work hard to have them. I care deeply about marriage and have devoted my professional life to this work. You’ll find me to be a sensitive, committed, and caring coach for your relationship. I ask a lot of questions and listen carefully. I’m deliberate yet flexible to your needs. I’m transparent with couples about what I am doing, why, and what options they have. I work hard so that you leave each session feeling more hopeful, reconnected, and empowered with specific ideas for what to do to create better moments between sessions. In the end, marriage requires the best of us…and offers the best to us. When two people are committed to sharing their lives with one another, it lifts each to a higher level and offers both endless possibilities. Achieving that potential takes a lifelong commitment and produces lifelong dividends that are worth it!

I’m often telling couples that their relationship contains tremendous strengths even if they’ve lost sight of what those are.  My style is warm, accepting, and open.  I am interested in the story that each couple brings and the journey that has brought you to therapy.  This process gives couples the space to share emotions, to redefine goals, and to refocus on the positives that can revive and rebuild the friendship and intimacy that brought you together in the first place.  I’m active with you in this process.  You’ll notice I offer guidance and direction each week and will create intentional activity (if need be) to help generate positive movement in your relationship.  It is a true joy to see couples renew trust, intimacy, and to discover again the hope for their marriage.

Relationships can present us with very complicated life situations.  Some of these circumstances are to be expected, yet some you would never dream of.  For 30 years I’ve been helping couples face their challenges and come through them stronger and more intimately connected.  My approach is strengths-based, positive, and more than anything…practical.  In many ways I’m a coach: encouraging you and empowering you to try new things, risk new vulnerability, and find deeper avenues to accept and embrace your partner.  The beauty of this process is each couple gets to work out their own version of what a “well-marriage” is for them.  It’s difficult but rewarding work.  The good news is as you improve your relationship, you feel great about being yourself and a strong sense of accomplishment for the connection you have forged.  That’s what I want for you: to feel confident in yourself as partners, to feel at peace with the past, and to feel hopeful for your future…together.
